For the love of lace and rust

You know that I have developed a passion for the combination of rough and delicate materials. One night a few weeks ago, just before I fell asleep, I came up with the idea for a collage using a rusty grid and lace leftovers. Luckily, I remembered it the next morning. I wish I wouldn’t always be too tired to take notes, when I get an idea at night. Who knows what ingenious concepts I’ve already missed, lol. Do you virtually create at night too?

Some pieces of lace and fabric were sewn to the grid, others were woven in. After I had embellished the grid, I attached it to an 8” x 8” painted and distressed wood block .

I found a rubber stamp in my stamp stash that has the same size grid like the real one.  Amazing. I used it to carry on the grid pattern on the upper left and lower right side.

Very pretty, Julia! Sometimes I have "ideas" just before I am falling off to sleep. If I am that tired I just hope I will remember it come morning, but usually I don't. I do try to write it down now when I think of something because that's it ~ it's there and then it's gone! : )

This is so pretty! Love the lace and rust effect. I too lay in bed at night and have so many ideas for crafting! I DO sometimes write them down, and when I read it in the morning, I wonder where in the heck "that" idea came from! I keep little pads everywhere in my house for when something strikes me to make. Love your ideas! (and you actually make them!)

I do the same thing, my head is always creating, even when it's bedtime, I'm conjuring up ideas. We need notebooks on our nightstands. Even if we did, we are too tired to jot our ideas down, I agree.

This is so gorgeous. It was meant to be.

Yes, too tired to jot down ideas is very frustrating. Lovely lace and rust and the juxtaposition is perfect. Creative Lace Bliss...

Oh Julia I'm sure the rust and lace ideas are forever forming in your head!
I have to force myself to stop creating in my head when I go to bed otherwise I would never sleep. It seems this is the only time we often get.

This artwork is fantastic. Love how you extended the grid pattern beyond the real mesh - at first you don't even notice until you look closely.

Love every one of your creations dear friend!

Sending much love and hugs,

great mix of textures and tones...I'm sure the pics don't do it justice - it would be fabulous to look at in close detail...and extending the grid pattern - brilliant!
as for me...the hot shower in the morning seems to be the place where I get ideas...not very conducive to writing them down in that situation either!
Happy weekend to you!

That is so unique. Your blog is garden of inspiration. Love the contrast of colors and textures. They are some of my favorites. Thank you for sharing! Best Wishes for a wonderful weekend.

I love it, what a great idea! I'm not a night time creator....Thankfully, or I would never sleep!

Very pretty! I got all kinds of ideas but just never seem to follow through. But when I go to bed at night, I'm either going over something that happened during the day, or I fall fast asleep. Much prefer the latter. :) Have a fab Friday. Tammy

Seriously?! Absolutely LOVE the contrast of rough and refined. Although not too refined. Lace and rust though?! I am there!!! And night time creating? There too. Of course you still try and sleep. Me I lay awake and keep thinking and creating (mentally). And gee wonder why I'm so tired lol Glad you remembered this in the morning - it's wonderful!!!! Romeo's thoughts? He wants to know if it's comfortable to lay on ;)

I'm the same way - all my best ideas happen late at night, and I usually get up to start working on them - which is why I'm always exhausted! Thanks for sharing at Knick of Time - I love your rusty/lacy creation!

Hi Julia,

What creativity in this post! And what an amazing idea you were consumed with regarding the combination of rough and delicate materials - such an interesting juxtaposition of textures! I love the choice of buttons, snippets of lace and the imitation of a crooked grid; not too perfect, and a nod to reality.

Thanks so much for sharing.

P.S. Some of my best ideas hit me as soon as my head hits the pillow, and like you, I've often wondered how many I've lost to my dreams!

Julia I believe that any creative person cannot turn their brain off at the end of the day, except if you are exhausted from painting all day. Your composition is beautiful and I have come to really appreciate the beauty of rust with its hues and colors. The juxtaposition is stunning.
