Christmas Decorating with Scrap Yard Finds

When I spotted a birdcage at the scrap yard some months ago, I didn’t want to show my excitement but I was surely thrilled. Sometimes the business owners put a firm price on certain items but the birdcage was sold for the scrap value at about 1.50$.

It’s perfect for seasonal decorations. For Christmas I just put some baubles and other decorative pieces inside and a silver birdie on top.

Now we turn to another of my multiple Christmas personalities, lol. I do love the rather girlie birdcage decor above but lately, I developed also a liking for a more rustic and rusty style, as you probably have realized during my last few posts. Last Christmas I had an idea of creating a tree from those round little metal pieces I had used in one of my Christmas tree wall hangings. I thought, when I could find them in different sizes and would attach them to a big rusty screw, that this would make a cool tree. This didn’t work out but I couldn’t let go the idea of a rusty 3-d tree and tried again this year. I looked through our stash of rusty parts from the scrap yard and found several round pieces, including a saw blade, a bicycle crank, large bolts, a spring and a small metal ball.

Rusty Junk Christmas Tree
It didn’t take long and my tree was assembled. Then dear hubby welded it together for me because glue wouldn’t have been strong enough to hold every piece in place.

Rusty Junk Christmas Tree
Neither very girlie nor rustic is my chippy mirror. It was a roadside find and I had used it without the frame in my studio for a while.

Christmas Decor - Chalkboard Mirror

Originally the frame was pretty ugly. It was partially tiled and had some wooden appliqués that I didn’t like at all. After those were removed and I had painted the frame a medium gray, it looked so much better already. I exchanged the tile part for a chalkboard. I love how it turned out.

My handwriting is not pretty and therefore I transferred the “Jingle Bells” lettering. I printed the words out on regular printer paper. Then I covered the back of the sheets with chalk and traced the letters with a sharp pencil onto the chalkboard. Voilà. Some spots had to be cleaned and some lines had to be completed but it helped a lot to get a nice lettering.

Is it really just a few days until Christmas? How could that happen? I’ll try again next year to be ready in time, lol.

Have a happy weekend!

Your junk parts tree is so cute, Julia! I think it's great you saw that in those pieces. Love the birdcage. Christmas always seems to come up so fast. I always say I have to start making the things I want to make earlier {and I'm sure I will say it again this year}.

I've been following your blog via email post updates for a little while now and have been really enjoying all your Christmas junk decor! I haven't been commenting until now, just thoroughly enjoying your lateral thinking re-inventions! I'm especially loving the pieces made from pallet wood and rusty metal, but I think my fav might be the tree you made using the vintage/antique book spines! It's so beautiful. A wonderful Christmas to you Julia. ♥

It takes a special imagination to be able to look at spare parts and put them together the way you have. This is my first time on your blog but I am floored by your creations, so special. I like different things so your steam punk tree is outstanding. Have fun with what you do, it's incredible. Happy Christmas

Liebe Julia,

I swear Julia, you can take anything and make it look good! I can't believe you got the birdcage for $1.50. That was a great buy! It doesn't seem like Christmas much around here. Can't believe it is just a few days away. Wishing you and yours happy holidays. Tammy

I just learned something new today. Upon seeing your post, I could have swore I heard "her" squeak. Yes, a squeak that had I not turned to look, probably would have been a squeal. A full fledged squeal. Didn't know "she" could make those kinds of noises. Would have been more excited had it been a mouse doing the squeaking, but none the less I know now that "she" can squeak. Will make me a bit more cautious when medicine and squeaks are in the same area of the house.

I must admit though that your Christmas no-bird-IN-the cage is heavenly! And the rusty Christmas tree was simply too much for "her" - that was the point at which the squeak was heard. She had to leave the room after the chaulkboard and mirror. It was all too much for "her". Thankfully, I didn't hear the car start up, lucky for you, your address is unknown to "her" or you'd probably be missing three nice pieces very soon.

I want to tell you that "she" doesn't much like "her" handwriting either. But practice makes better and it's easy to erase if you don't like it! I'm sure you could have done it - be brave! It's only chaulk!!!

Purrs and hugs for a purrfect Christmas holiday!!!

Hello sweet Julia
Well that bird cage is rather neat is it not? With very little to do you have a most beautiful piece only needing to be filled with all manner of Christmas decorations like the baubles, star and bird.
Just love your latest steam punk style Christmas tree - so ingenious and just think of the multi uses after Christmas and all through the year too!

I love the way your crazed mirror came up using that mid grey paint with the chalk board. Looks fantastic! I love how we can view your other tree creations and star through the crazing.

Sending love and hugs for a magical Christmas my dear Julia,
