How I got inspired lately and two gifts I like to show you

I prefer to work upright and mostly create standing on my cutting table or on my ironing board. No matter if I work on a small or a larger project, I always make a pretty huge mess at these places. Laces, fabrics, old book pages, tools, jewelry pieces, boxes with all kinds of embellishments etc. pile up. After a while there is only a tiny space left that allows me to cut, glue or iron. Then it’s time again to put away everything, besides my rotary cutter, scissors, glue, pencils and a few other things which I like to have readily available.

Did you ever get inspired when cleaning up your work space? It happened to me last week. After I had cleared a few things from my cutting table, I came across an oval shadow box, which originally had been a little tray. I had screwed off the handles a while ago but hadn’t gotten around to do something with it. While carrying on with the clearance, I found some items, which I thought would go well with the shadow box, like a cabinet card, a vintage measuring tape, a millinery flower, a brass filigree and of course some laces. Instead of putting those things back into their boxes, I set them aside and when the table was tidy, I instantly started to create a collage.

Isn’t this little girl a cutie? While leafing through a vintage children’s book, I came across the name “Emmy” and thought it was suitable for her. What really amazed me was, that the photo was taken by a female photographer. I’m sure that in those days it was very rare that a woman owned a photo studio, in that case even two.

When dear hubby came in, to see what was going on in the studio, a vintage pair of decorative shoestrings struck him. He said, that they would look good hanging from the lower side of the shadow box. “That’s the plan”, I said and we both laughed because it happens quite often that we come up with the same ideas or have the same thoughts at the same time.

I have received two lovely packages lately that I would like to share with you. The first one came from Susan Degeneres. She thanked me for doing her a little favor by sending me very yummy laces and buttons together with a pretty card.

laces from Susan

I’m sure you can imagine that my heart jumped for joy when I unwrapped all these beautiful pieces.

Thank you, dear Susan! That was very generous and I will enjoy using those wonderful treasures!

Then I had won Anni’s OWOH door prize and it arrived on Friday. It’s a beautiful heart-shaped fabric collage.

Thank you, dear Anni! I’m very happy that I won your beautiful gift.

It’s still cold over here but we had some sunshine last week and it is supposed to be sunny for the next days as well. The magpies seem to get spring feelings already. I saw some of them flying with large branches in their beaks to build new nests or repair the old ones. Hopefully that’s a sign that it will get a bit warmer soon and some flowers will show up. Have you seen any signs of spring yet?

Love your new treasures ~ I'm sure all the buttons and lace will be put to good use and that heart is so beautiful!

Isn't it fun to be cleaning up in the studio and discover inspiration in the "piles" of supplies. Your oval collage is lovely. I really like how you used the numbers around the inner edge and the shoelaces, of course, were the perfect touch!

I love reading the thought process of how you create. Funny how sparks go off when we least expect them.....but we have to go with it even if it interupts our cleanup time. You're lucky your hubby takes an interest in your work. G will encourage me but would probably never recommend anything as much as he does come up with good ideas when it comes to decorating. Your little Emmy is very sweet indeed.....I had the same haircut as a child ...haha

Julia, everything is so beautiful, your creations and your gifts too. And yes, I do get inspired when I clean my studio. I always find things I've forgotten about! I always think everything has been put where it's supposed to go - with other similar things. But then I discover that they aren't! So the odd piece put where it didn't belong might be just the thing I need for inspiration.
Obviously, cleaning your work space did the same thing! The oval is gorgeous!
Hugs, Diane

Herzlichst trau.mau

Julia, I don't think you will ever know how much your artwork has inspired me. Because of you, Dorthe, Lovey, and a handful of others, I have found a love of fabric collage. This little shadow box is perfect in every way. Emmy is such a little darling. Hmmm, maybe if I would clean up my space I could find a little inspiration too!

Your beautiful package of laces and bits must have thrilled you, as well as the lovely hearts from Anni.

sending hugs...

Hallo liebe Julia,

I have just one thing to say...
you need to clean out your studio more often! That is totally beautiful. You have such a great style & way of putting things together (apparently your husband does too).
I must have been nursing my sick kids the month OWOH went on because I totally missed it. Your giveaway & prize are awesome. Isn't blog mail the best??? Much better than bills.
I hope your having a good week sweetie. We're preparing for Spring break next week. Yipee!

Hi Julia,

I'm still trying to catch up so I'm a little late commenting on your post. You're shadow box is just gorgeous; I love everything about it. And I agree - cleaning your studio space can be so very inspiring...seeing everything, touching it, piles of goodies in juxtaposition.

I'm glad you like the lace & buttons. Thanks for the linky love.

Hello dear Julia!
Finally I get around again visiting my fave blogs.
I must say that I love your oval collage/assemblage. It came out so pretty and I especially like the measurement tape on the inside and of course the old cabinet card. If the girl or her family would know what you did with so many it decades later I'm sure they would be absolutely thrilled!
That's so cool that your hubby and you think so alike!
I too get inspired the way you do, so I should clean my studio more often lol and yes there are lot's of signs of spring around here!
I wish you a beautiful and sunny Spring weekend!
